"The Overworked American"(1992) and "The Overspent American"(1998), both by Juliet B. Schor, both published by Basic Books, New York,NY. Excellent references which dramatically paint a picture of just how crazy it has gotten chasing the American Dream.

"How Much Is Enough?" by Alan Durning, W.W. Norton and Company, New York, NY.1992. This insightful little book was co-winner in 1992 of the Harry Chapin Media Award. This book argues that either extreme of economics (either over consumption or poverty) devastates the human spirit and the environment. During seeks to find a middle ground where human need is met without so much environmental destruction.
